I La Galigo , an internasional theater production inspired by Sureq Galigo , the creation epic of the Bugis people of South Sulawesi finally docks on the island of its birth.
On April 23 and 24 ,2011 , I La Galigo was performed in Makassar the capital of South Sulawesi. And since its world premier at the Esplanade Theatre in Singapore 2003, Galigo kept gaining success in world major cities. The New York Times called it a "stunningly beautiful music-theater work".
However the producers Change Performing Arts and Bali Purnati Center, felt that the journey was far from over. Before continuing on its internasional itinerary, I La Galigo had to come home hence, I La Galigo Dock at Makassar with the soncere hope that this production will be offered annually in Makassar.
The April 2011 performances, series of dicussion, and photos and object of art exibation was made possible by the generous support of the Makassar Municipal Government and mr Tanri Abeng and Indonesia sponsor from Bugis in their commitment to bring I La Galigo to South Sulawesi.
These Performances in Makassar are not only about present Galigo to the people of South Sulawesi but as an important step in a longer road in the preservation of the Sureq Galigo and its recognation as a treasure of the world Literature. We believes that terminology " Dock" for Makasar production implies that journey for Galigo is far from over. |
